anthrax formed in queens, new york city, on july 18, 1981 guitarists scott ian , dan lilker. band named after disease of same name ian saw in biology textbook. name chosen because sounded sufficiently evil . anthrax s initial line-up completed singer john connelly, drummer dave weiss , bassist paul kahn. kahn briefly replaced bassist kenny kushner before lilker took on over bass , greg walls joined lead guitarist. weiss replaced on greg d angelo, recommended band greg walls. scott ian s younger brother jason rosenfeld temporary vocalist until ian s former schoolmate neil turbin joined band in late august 1982. band recorded first demo tape during time.
