the story of cody caves began 600 million years ago when limestone in caves later formed laid down @ bottom of ancient sea. then, around 170 million years ago, limestone beds thrust upwards. exposed rock elements, water , carbonic acid, formed cody caves. approximately 875 yards (800 m) of cody caves passageways explorable. caves have several types of calcite formations, such stalagmites, stalactites, soda straws , flowstone. boxwork considered among best in world, protruding 20.3 cm, whereas 2.5 5 cm average. these ancient formations have been growing @ average rate of 1 cubic centimetre per hundred years.
the ainsworth hot springs originate in cody caves area , considered best commercial hot springs in british columbia. temperatures vary 40–42 °c (104–108 °f) in cave 35–38 °c (95–100 °f) in pool.
