the party s greatest success came in 1991 provincial election. going election, provincial liberals held seats in legislature, many conservatives, in fredericton area , rural southern new brunswick, still upset pc party on bilingualism issue. cor able capitalize on situation , captured 21.2% of vote (87,256 votes) , 8 seats despite running in 48 ridings.


the party ran full slates in northumberland, westmorland , victoria counties, have mixed english-speaking , acadian populations, , full slate in acadian-but-bilingual restigouche county. party nominated 1 candidate in kent county, 2 in gloucester county. no candidates cor ran in unilingual french madawaska county. progressive conservatives, ran full slate of 58 candidates, received 20.7% of vote.


the 1991 election allowed confederation of regions party sit official opposition, , success prompted pro-bilingual politicians enshrine section 16.1 in charter of rights strengthen new brunswick s bilingualism. however, cor s leader, arch pafford, had not been able win seat. danny cameron chosen interim leader, , went on run party leader @ 1992 convention in campbellton. there, defeated rival brent taylor.
