producer william alland attending dinner party during filming of orson welles citizen kane (in alland played reporter thompson) in 1941 when mexican cinematographer gabriel figueroa told him myth of race of half-fish, half-human creatures in amazon river. figueroa spoke of friend of disappeared in amazon while filming documentary on rumored population of fish people. alland wrote story notes entitled sea monster ten years later. there various designs creature. william alland envisioned creature sad, beautiful monster , sculpture of of aquatic development of human. alland said, still frighten you, because how human was, not other way around . originally, creature s design meant incorporate sleek, feminine eel-like figure, did not have many bumps , gills final version. designer of approved gill-man former disney illustrator milicent patrick, though role deliberately downplayed makeup artist bud westmore, half century receive sole credit creature s conception. gill-man suit made airtight molded sponge rubber , cost $15,000. underwater sequences filmed @ wakulla springs in north florida (today state park), many of rear projection images. part of film shot in jacksonville, florida on south side of river near foot of old acosta bridge. in underwater scenes, air fed gill-man suit rubber hose.
