the station has entrance block ticket office. ramps , passenger subway lead platforms. station 1 of few retain original buffet, 1998 refurbishment of won awards camra , english heritage. @ 2008 tameside food , drink festival voted best bar.
following further refurbishment in 2012 lord pendry of stalybridge, uses buffet bar , contributed on half of £6,000 costs, unveiled plaque mark works.

in £1.5m overhaul of station, began in 2007, platforms raised , toilets, information services , shelters on westbound platform improved. in december 2008 new entrance completed.
recent developments
construction work, on platform 3, add lifts station subway.
further work expand station completed in 2012 - saw major alterations track layout (including opening of 2 new platforms) , signalling, control of latter passing manchester east signalling centre @ stockport. project cost £20 million station closed on sundays throughout summer of 2012 followed nine-day line blockade @ end of october gives improved operational flexibility , reliability, allowed line speed through station , junction increased 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) , left ready proposed electrification of leeds - manchester trans-pennine route in 2022. 2 new platforms opened on 5 november 2012; former platform 1 renumbered 4, , new bay on northern side platform 5.
an access scheme, funded department transport, gave easier access of platforms. lifts built give step-free access entire station, though station had no steps there ramps platforms.
