the bureau of labor statistics measures employment , unemployment (of on 15 years of age) using 2 different labor force surveys conducted united states census bureau (within united states department of commerce) and/or bureau of labor statistics (within united states department of labor) gather employment statistics monthly. current population survey (cps), or household survey , conducts survey based on sample of 60,000 households. survey measures unemployment rate based on ilo definition.

the bureau of labor statistics calculates 6 alternate measures of unemployment, u1 through u6, measure different aspects of unemployment:



u1: percentage of labor force unemployed 15 weeks or longer.
u2: percentage of labor force lost jobs or completed temporary work.
u3: official unemployment rate per ilo definition occurs when people without jobs , have actively looked work within past 4 weeks.
u4: u3 + discouraged workers , or have stopped looking work because current economic conditions make them believe no work available them.
u5: u4 + other marginally attached workers , or loosely attached workers , or , able work, have not looked work recently.
u6: u5 + part-time workers want work full-time, cannot due economic reasons (underemployment).

note: marginally attached workers added total labour force unemployment rate calculation u4, u5, , u6. bls revised cps in 1994 , among changes measure representing official unemployment rate renamed u3 instead of u5. in 2013, representative hunter proposed bureau of labor statistics use u5 rate instead of current u3 rate.
