caroline listed part of national historic fleet. on decommissioning, placed care of national museum of royal navy @ portsmouth, though remaining moored in position in alexandra dock in belfast. although no longer capable of making way under own power, caroline remains afloat , in excellent condition. buffeting waves , high winds have caused ship come away moorings several times. in 2005, during storm, ripped several huge bollards out of jetty concrete, failed break free entirely. not open tourists, although entrance gained during annual rms titanic celebrations.
upon caroline s decommissioning in 2011, future uncertain. proposals made return ship first world war appearance, among other things have involved sourcing , installing 6-inch (152.4-mm) , 4-inch (102-mm) guns of era , removing large deckhouse midships deck. 1 proposal considered remain in belfast museum ship within titanic quarter development alongside ss nomadic. move portsmouth, many of original fittings restored return as possible first world war appearance.
in june 2012 plans move caroline portsmouth announced, subject availability of funding. however, in october 2012 northern ireland government announced ship remain in belfast , national heritage memorial fund had pledged £1,000,000 restore her. in may 2013 heritage lottery fund announced £845,600 grant support conversion work museum.

in october 2014, heritage lottery fund announced £12 million lottery funding boost enable national museum of royal navy turn caroline visitor attraction in time centenary commemorations of 1916 battle of jutland. caroline remains moored in alexandra dock in titanic quarter in belfast.
