the cbd, substantial employment, , increasing number of residents, contains main public transport hubs of city. these services concentrated around britomart transport centre (rail , buses) , nearby auckland ferry terminal, both near auckland waterfront. many bus services travel length of cbd along main streets, in particular via bus lanes on albert street , central connector bus priority route. in 2010, around 33,000 people entered cbd via public transport every day.


historically, of transport , around cbd post 1950s private vehicles, partly because cbd provides numerous parking buildings , parking spaces associated office buildings, due being area totally surrounded (and relatively accessible) motorways.


auckland council beginning construction phase of city rail link. once completed, connect current terminus @ britomart more directly western line in vicinity of mount eden train station way of tunnel running under cbd. 2 new stations constructed, 1 @ aotea square , 1 on karangahape road, , existing stations @ each end of link, britomart , mount eden, receive substantial upgrades.


the main street of cbd queen street, upgraded between 2006 , 2008 modernise , make more pedestrian friendly.


in 2009, former auckland city council proposed redevelopment of several cbd streets shared spaces, goal of improving pedestrian , cyclist amenity slowing down vehicle traffic while retaining possibility car access - compared pedestrian mall allows no motor vehicles. auckland council continuing project. darby street, lorne street, fort street, jean batten place, , fort lane have been converted shared spaces since 2011. portion of federal street between wellesley street west , victoria street west has been made shared space.
