achnacarry castle

achnacarry castle ancestral home of chiefs of clan cameron, located @ achnacarry, 15 mi (24 km) northeast of fort william, scotland near foot of loch arkaig. original castle built around 1655 , destroyed after battle of culloden in 1746; new house in scottish baronial style built nearby in 1802.

ewen eoghainn macailein cameron, xiii chief of clan cameron, built highly disputed tor castle (said have been on clan mackintosh lands) in 16th century. tor castle remain seat of camerons of lochiel until demolished great-great-great grandson, sir ewen dubh cameron, xvii chief.


sir ewen cameron wanted more convenient house, further removed clan mackintosh, clan campbell , oliver cromwell s garrison @ inverlochy castle. built achnacarry castle in around 1655 in strategic position on isthmus between loch lochy , loch arkaig. 1 of few remaining descriptions relate lochiel s seat large house, built of fir-planks, handsomest of kind in britain. sir ewen s bard described home somewhere around 1663 in song generous house of feasting...pillared hall of princes...where wine goes round freely in gleaming glasses...music resounding under rafters. others portrayed old achnacarry man s home, feel , of grand hunting lodge amidst west highlands.


with sir ewen s death in 18th century son john cameron became clan chief, after son, donald assume achnacarry when lord lochiel (as father known) fled exile in flanders after first jacobite uprising.


from donald cameron ( gentle lochiel ) xix chief find best description of grounds of achnacarry. in marriage contract requirement placed in lochiel had build wife house...to value of 100 pounds sterling @ least, gardens, office houses [privies], lands, other conveniencys. donald planting long line of beech trees near banks of river arkaig when word of bonnie prince charlie s landing arrived in 1745...it last landscaping done @ achnacarry castle years come.


with jacobite army s defeat @ battle of culloden in april 1746 clans retreated scottish highlands, donald taking lead in re-grouping them. after last attempt @ resistance failed, , men took mountains. on may 28, 1746, donald watched men bligh s regiment under command of lt-col edward cornwallis , independent company of munros, commanded george munro, 1st of culcairn, burned achnacarry ground. many valued relics , personal possessions relocated beforehand, great fir-planked old achnacarry left in ashes.

in 1802 achnacarry, had spent last fifty or years in ruin, rebuilt under donald cameron, xxii chief of clan cameron scottish baronial style home, although new achnacarry still referred castle. wife anne née abercromby engaged james gillespie architect.

the current building , surrounding estate gained fame commando training depot allied forces march 1942 1945. british commandos, united states army rangers , commandos france, netherlands, norway, czechoslovakia, poland , belgium trained there. each training course culminated in opposed landing exercise around area of nearby bunarkaig on loch lochy. live ammunition used, there casualties whilst training @ achnacarry. according daily telegraph, 25,000 commandos completed training @ centre during 4 years in use.


the castle suffered damage due fire. several military associations still sponsor commando march either annually or time time. timed 7 mile march, in full battle gear, backpack , combat boots, spean bridge (site of striking commando memorial) achnacarry.
