early career

mccarthy started professional career playing premiership club london wasps in 2001–02 season. made single substitute appearance team in year s premiership against sale sharks, , did not play in european games. following season made increased number of appearances, playing 3 times in 2002–03 premiership wasps won title. made 2 appearances in 2002–03 european challenge cup, playing both first round ties against overmarch parma, including making first start away italians on 12 october 2002, in tournament wasps went on win, domestic , european double.


mccarthy joined irish side connacht in 2003. made debut bench in celtic league match away against welsh side cardiff blues on 13 september. mccarthy played 16 times in total in 2003–04 celtic league, scoring 2 tries. made 8 appearances in 2003–04 european challenge cup connacht made semi-finals, narrowly beaten eventual winners harlequins on 2 legs. mccarthy left connacht after 1 season, returning english rugby newcastle falcons.


newcastle falcons

mccarthy made debut newcastle falcons on 5 september 2004 against worcester warriors, scoring try falcons won 30–9. made total of 21 appearances in 2004–05 premiership , scored 2 tries. season helped team reach quarter-finals of heineken cup, starting of group games , scoring try against newport gwent dragons. played in quarter-final against stade français @ parc des princes, newcastle beaten 48–8 eventual runners-up.


in following season s premiership, mccarthy played 19 games, , scored 3 tries newcastle finished 7th in league. after having been in heineken cup previous season, newcastle dropped european challenge cup. mccarthy played in 4 of 6 group games, scoring 3 tries in match italian side l aquila. in following round falcons faced mccarthy s old side connacht, , scored try in 23–3 victory @ kingston park. newcastle went through semi-finals, mccarthy played in narrow defeat london irish, final score of 27–22. mccarthy named supporters player of season in 2006.


mccarthy played 9 games newcastle in 2006–07 premiership, scored try against sale sharks. played 5 times in challenge cup, scoring try against petrarca padova, newcastle qualified quarter-finals. mccarthy did not feature in quarter-final loss clermont. mccarthy left falcons in 2007, having played side 74 times.


return connacht

mccarthy rejoined connacht @ beginning of 2007–08 season. played in 14 games team in 2007–08 celtic league. mccarthy started in 6 of connacht s group games in 2007–08 european challenge cup, included 2 matches against former side newcastle. 2008–09 saw him make fewer appearances in both competitions, playing in 9 of connacht s 2008–09 celtic league matches , 4 of challenge cup games.


in following season, mccarthy made total 23 appearances team, including starting of connacht s matches in 2009–10 european challenge cup, made semi-finals. team faced toulon team featuring english fly-half jonny wilkinson, former newcastle teammate of mccarthy s. toulon won 19–12 in galway, wilkinson kicking 14 of french club s points. following season saw mccarthy start in every 1 of connacht s 22 2010–11 celtic league, , appear in 6 of team s challenge cup games, starting 1 of these games on bench, though connacht failed make past pool stages. earned 100th cap connacht season, against bayonne in challenge cup on 15 january 2011.


the 2011–12 season saw connacht qualify heineken cup first time. mccarthy started every 1 of connacht s games, including team s first ever win in competition, in home game against harlequins. started 19 of connacht s games in pro 12, new name celtic league. following season saw mccarthy play 13 games in 2012–13 pro 12, scoring single try. connacht played in season s heineken cup, time winning 3 of 6 games, mccarthy again ever present. mccarthy s last season province however, had been announced in december 2012 mccarthy join rival irish province leinster @ end of season. left connacht having made 134 appearances in second spell team, , 160 appearances overall.


leinster

mccarthy joined leinster ahead of 2013–14 season. made debut against scarlets on 6 september 2013 in pro 12. made european debut side in october year against ospreys, , went on start 6 of leinster s pool games in 2013–14 heineken cup.


rc narbonne

on 6 march 2017, mccarthy signed two-year contract french club rc narbonne in pro d2 ahead of 2017-18 season.


on 17 may 2017, mccarthy confirmed not joining narbonne , has been forced retire due elbow injury.
