in response increased interest in zoology—and regard aristotelian theology, experienced renaissance through works of claude perrault; passion exotic, louis xiv ordered construction of ménagerie in 1662. completed in 1664, ménagerie located @ southern end of transverse branch of grand canal. comprising complex of building featured central octagonal two-story pavilion, ménagerie favorite destination visitors , courtiers. in diderot s encyclopédie, louis-jean-marie daubenton recounts story in louis xiv took delivery of african elephant gift.



in 1668 king of portugal sent elephant kingdom of congo king of france. seventeen years old , measured 6 , half feet ground top of back. elephant lived in menagerie @ versailles thirteen years , grew further foot, no doubt because change in climate , food had stunted growth; measured 7 , half feet when gentlemen of royal academy of sciences carried out description of it.



the ground floor of central pavilion contained salon frais, decorated shell work resemble grotto. on second floor series of rooms, each balcony overlooked animal enclosures surrounded pavilion.


in 1697, 12-year-old marie-adélaïde de savoie married louis xiv s grandson, louis, duc de bourgogne. duchesse s vivacity , precociousness won heart of aging king, presented ménagerie duchesse. between 1698 , 1700 interior redecorated. in stylistic departure aesthetic of louis xiv s fourth building campaign in chateau, characterized courtly austerity, new décor of ménagerie characterized youthful exuberance anticipated rococo style of louis xv.


regrettably, in 1801 ménagerie, had been sold during sales of land occurred after revolution, destroyed. today, pavilion de la lanterne, surviving vestige of ménagerie, being restored providing glimpse of cynegetic decoration of lost versailles masterpiece.
