after landing troops , supplies, , consolidating position @ fort st. simons, spanish began cautiously reconnoiter beyond perimeter. found road between fort st. simons , fort frederica, first assumed narrow track farm road. on july 18, spanish undertook reconnaissance in force along road approximately 115 men under command of captain sebastian sanchez. 1 , half miles fort frederica, sanchez column made contact oglethorpe s soldiers, under command of noble jones. ensuing skirmish became known battle of gully hole creek. spanish routed, third of soldiers either killed or captured. oglethorpe s forces advanced military road in direction of fort st. simons, in pursuit of retreating spanish. spanish prisoners revealed larger spanish force advancing in opposite direction, along road fort st. simons frederica. oglethorpe left gather reinforcements.
