velbazhd formed in 1919, though club changed name in following year sport club motsion. in 1928 changed name sport club borislav. 1940 1945 club called pautalia. after world war ii changed name cherveno zname. in 1956 club renamed levski. in 1970 club returned original name velbаzhd, 1990 1999 again called levski.


in 1953 promoted bulgarian football s top division first time in history. 1954 season saw velbazhd make first appearance in top flight of bulgarian football. first season less successful , relegated b pfg, finishing on 12th place.


in 1994–95 season velbazhd won second promotion pfg. in 1998–99 season finished 3rd, highest ever league finish. in following season velbazhd finished 3rd. club s forward mihail mihaylov became pfg top scorer 20 goals.


in 2001 velbazhd reached bulgarian cup final first time, beating marek dupnitsa, metalurg pernik, spartak pleven , lokomotiv sofia place in final. however, lost final 1–0 litex lovech.
