in 16th century, portuguese , dutch traders made contact east timor. missionaries maintained sporadic contact until 1642 when portugal took on , maintained control until 1974, brief occupation japan during world war ii.


indonesia invaded east timor in 1975 , annexed former portuguese colony. east timorese animist belief systems did not fit indonesia s constitutional monotheism, resulting in mass conversions christianity. portuguese clergy replaced indonesian priests , latin , portuguese mass replaced indonesian mass. church played important role in society during indonesian occupation of east timor. while 20% of east timorese called catholics @ time of 1975 invasion, figure surged reach 95% end of first decade after invasion. during occupation, bishop carlos ximenes belo became 1 of prominent advocates human rights in east timor , many priests , nuns risked lives in defending citizens military abuses. pope john paul ii s 1989 visit east timor exposed occupied territory s situation world media , provided catalyst independence activists seek global support. officially neutral, vatican wished retain relations indonesia, world s largest muslim nation. upon arrival in east timor, pope symbolically kissed cross pressed ground, alluding usual practice of kissing ground on arrival in nation, , yet avoiding overtly suggesting east timor sovereign country. spoke fervently against abuses in sermon, whilst avoiding naming indonesian authorities responsible. pope spoke out against violence in east timor, , called both sides show restraint, imploring east timorese love , pray enemies.

a number of priest , nuns murdered in violence in east timor followed 1999 independence referendum. newly independent nation declared 3 days of national mourning upon death of pope john paul ii in 2005.


the roman catholic church remains involved in politics, 2005 confrontations government on religious education in school , forgoing of war crimes trials atrocities against east timorese indonesia. have endorsed new prime minister in efforts promote national reconciliation. in june 2006 catholic relief services received aid united states victims of months of unrest in country. number of churches has grown 100 in 1974 on 800 in 1994.
