the lake formed glacial lake algonquin water levels dropped, occupying deepest parts of lake michigan basin. waters drained through straits of mackinac, across lake stanley either lake hough , st. lawrence river way of ottawa river valley, or through st. clair , detroit rivers lake erie , out niagara river towards st. lawrence. around 10,300 ybp, lake chippewa’s levels continued drop, , basin self-contained body of water without outlet. levels returned , lake chippewa again flowed through canyon @ mackinac until around 7,500 ybp. @ time, nipissing great lakes merged waters in michigan basin , created single lake encompassing 3 of upper great lakes.
