General Ashley.27s 1823 expedition Hugh Glass
some mountain men maintained close relationship native american tribes
in 1822, many men responded advertisement in missouri gazette , public advertiser placed general william henry ashley, called corps of 100 men ascend river missouri part of fur-trading venture. many of them, later earned reputations famous mountain men, joined enterprise, including james beckwourth, john s. fitzgerald, david jackson, william sublette, jim bridger, thomas fitzpatrick, , jedediah smith. these men , others later known ashley s hundred . glass, however, did not join ashley s company until next year, when ascended missouri river ashley. in june 1823 met many of men had joined in 1822, , attacked arikara warriors. glass apparently shot in leg , survivors retreated downstream , sent help.
