the first organizational meeting of american football league took place on august 14, 1959. harry wismer, representing city of new york @ meeting, proclaimed state ready professional football team , more capable of running daily operations.
wismer granted charter franchise later dubbed titans of new york wismer explained, titans bigger , stronger giants. secured titans home field @ decrepit polo grounds, team struggled financially , on field during first 3 years. 1962, debt continued mount wismer, forcing afl assume costs of team until season s end.

a five-man syndicate, headed sonny werblin, saved team bankruptcy, purchasing lowly titans $1 million. werblin renamed team new york jets since team play in shea stadium near laguardia airport. new name intended reflect modern approach of team. jets owners hired weeb ewbank general manager , head coach. ewbank , quarterback joe namath led jets prominence in 1969, when new york defeated heavily favored baltimore colts in super bowl iii , solidified afl s position in world of professional football.
when afl , nfl merged, team fell state of mediocrity along star quarterback, namath, had 3 successful post-merger seasons after injuries hampered of career. jets continued spiral downward before enjoying string of successes in 1980s, included appearance in 1982 afc championship game, , emergence of popular new york sack exchange.
the 1990s saw new york struggling. after firing coach bruce coslet, owner leon hess hired pete carroll struggled 6–10 record , promptly fired @ end of season. thereafter, rich kotite selected lead team victory; instead led jets 4–28 record on next 2 years. kotite stepped down @ end of second season forcing jets search new head coach.
hess lured then-disgruntled new england patriots head coach bill parcells new york in 1997. parcells led team relevance , coached them afc championship game in 1998. hess died in 1999 while team, plagued injuries, produced 8 win record, falling short of playoff berth. @ end of season, parcells stepped down head coach deferring control assistant, bill belichick; belichick resigned next day (leaving napkin @ stage introduction, on had written resign hc of nyj ) , went on accept head coaching position patriots.
the franchise obtained new owner in woody johnson in 2000. additionally, through 2000s jets visited playoffs 5 times, franchise record, under direction of 3 different coaches. rex ryan hired in january 2009. ryan led team back-to-back afc championship appearances during first 2 years team never made playoffs again during tenure.
