sweden upper secondary school in sweden lasts 3 years (formerly 4 years on programmes). gymnasium word used describe stage of education system in sweden. national agency of education has decided gymnasium equivalent international upper secondary school. gymnasium optional , follows after 9 years in elementary school. however, swedish term högskola (translated high school ) may cause confusion. in swedish used synonymously university , difference being universities have right issue doctoral examinations. in case of technical universities, these called högskola when have right issue doctoral examinations (e.g. chalmers tekniska högskola, lunds tekniska högskola, kungliga tekniska högskolan). högskola located in cities lower population, except technical ones can found in largest cities.
