in april 2005, coyle named new manager of st johnstone. in march 2006, awarded manager of month scottish first division team s performance. coyle led st johnstone 2–0 victory on rangers @ ibrox reach semi-finals of scottish league cup. first win on glasgow club @ ibrox in 35 years. st johnstone lost 3–1 after time hibernian in semi-final. saints reached semi-finals of scottish cup away wins against spl clubs falkirk , motherwell, lost 2–1 celtic @ hampden in semi-final.

coyle left wigan on 2 december 2013, wigan losing third time in week, , lying 14th in table.

on 8 december 2014, coyle agreed three-year deal become head coach of mls club houston dynamo. announcement delayed due mls cup final.

on 25 may 2016, coyle , club announced departure mutual consent, coyle stating desire closer family remained residing in united kingdom, while dynamo not satisfied results on pitch.

blackburn rovers

coyle appointed manager of championship club blackburn rovers on two-year contract on 2 june 2016. after thirty-seven games in charge, coyle mutually parted company blackburn on 21 february 2017.

ross county

on 28 september 2017, scottish premiership club ross county appointed coyle manager on two-year contract.
