the earliest recorded observations noted western ukrainian nobles spoke east slavic ukrainian (or ruthenian) language, rather polish. although spoke same language ukrainian peasants, maintained own particular traditions. nobles tended more literate peasants. nobility tended use literary ukrainian language rather local village dialects. reflecting exposure education, noble speech differentiated of peasants frequent use of polish , latin words , expressions.


the western ukrainian nobility used surnames names of villages lived. example, nobles of terlo adopted name terletsky, , of kulchytsi adopted name kulchytsky. surnames ending in -ich (-ич) or -ik (-ик) used. gave children ukrainian names on occasion gave them polish versions of ukrainian names.
