castello miramare (miramare castle)

the castello miramare, or miramare castle, on waterfront 8 kilometres (5 miles) trieste, built between 1856 , 1860 project carl junker working under archduke maximilian. castle gardens provide setting of beauty variety of trees, chosen , planted on orders of maximilian, today make remarkable collection. features of particular attraction in gardens include 2 ponds, 1 noted swans , other lotus flowers, castle annexe ( castelletto ), bronze statue of maximilian, , small chapel kept cross made remains of novara , flagship on maximilian, brother of emperor franz josef, set sail become emperor of mexico.


much later, castle home of prince amedeo, duke of aosta, last commander of italian forces in east africa during second world war. during period of application of instrument provisional regime of free territory of trieste, established in treaty of peace italy (paris 10/02/1947), castle served headquarters united states army s trust force.

the castel san giusto, or castle of san giusto, designed on remains of previous castles on site, , took 2 centuries build. stages of development of castle s defensive structures marked central part built under frederick iii (1470-1), round venetian bastion (1508-9), hoyos-lalio bastion , pomis, or bastione fiorito dated 1630.
