wisconsin opened 2009 season @ home against northern illinois. both teams had gone through disappointing seasons year before, wisconsin finishing 7-6 overall , 3-5 in big ten blowout loss in 2008 champs sports bowl, , northern illinois finishing 6-7 overall loss in 2008 independence bowl.
on wisconsin s first play scrimmage, qb scott tolzien, surprise winner of quarterback competition in spring practice, threw 80-yard touchdown strike wr isaac anderson. 11 seconds game, badgers led 7-0. northern illinois responded 40-yard field goal mike salerno late in 1st quarter. in 2nd quarter, after wisconsin offense brought badgers within striking range, isaac anderson ran 23 yards touchdown extend wisconsin s lead 14-3. niu kept in game salerno field goal, , badgers led 14-6 @ end of first half.
in 3rd quarter, wisconsin running john clay scored pair of 1-yard touchdowns give badgers commanding 28-6 lead going 4th quarter. however, northern illinois not go away, rb chad spann tacked on 1-yard touchdown cut wisconsin s lead 28-12. however, ensuing 2-point conversion failed , huskies trailed 28-12. spann add 2-yard touchdown run cut niu s deficit 28-18, , qb chandler harnish converted 2 point try make score 28-20. northern illinois recovered onside kick, final drive stalled on wisconsin 36 , huskies turned ball on over downs, allowing wisconsin come victory.

fresno state entered game having won last trip madison, in 2001 season. appeared on way win after fresno qb ryan colburn connected chestin west 13-yard touchdown pass give fresno 7-0 lead on wisconsin in 1st quarter. on fresno s next drive, colburn found wr devon wylie on 70-yard touchdown strike put bulldogs 14-0 in 2nd quarter. however, wisconsin fought back; running zach brown ran 11 yards touchdown cap off long wisconsin drive, cutting wisconsin s deficit 14-7. fresno attempted pull away again; colburn found wr seyi ajirotutu on 14-yard td strike extend fresno state s lead 21-7. wisconsin responded swiftly, 8-yard touchdown run off end-around wr david gilreath bring game within single score @ 21-14. wisconsin k philip welch connected on longest field goal in school history, 57 yard try cut fresno state s lead 21-17 @ end of half.
a scoreless 3rd quarter saw badgers needing big play in 4th quarter. wisconsin defensive backs intercepted colburn twice in 3rd, badgers didn t points off turnovers. after fresno state punt, wisconsin got big play needed; rb john clay broke several tackles , ran 72 yards touchdown give wisconsin 24-21 lead. fresno, stunned not yet beaten, rallied , drove late in 4th quarter tying field goal kevin goessling. wisconsin ran out remaining clock , game went overtime.
fresno state elected play defense first in overtime, wisconsin scored on first possession, qb scott tolzien connected wr nick toon 6-yard touchdown pass give wisconsin 30-24 lead. philip welch converted pat give wisconsin 31-24 lead. fresno state scored touchdown on first overtime possession, colburn finding ajirotutu 7-yard touchdown strike , fourth touchdown pass of game. goessling made pat, , game headed second overtime. colburn not fortunate though, intercepted in end zone s chris maragos. philip welch kicked 22-yard field goal win game badgers.

in 3rd quarter, wisconsin rb zach brown lost fumble , michigan state recovered. msu drove deep wisconsin territory, badger defense stopped msu in red zone , spartans forced try field goal. msu k brett swenson converted 28 yard attempt, , cut wisconsin s lead 21-10. wisconsin drove field on next drive, msu s defense held badgers out of redzone , forced field goal. philip welch converted give badgers 24-10 lead. michigan state not go away easily, , drove field touchdown, time cousins b.j. cunningham. swenson converted pat , wisconsin led 24-17 @ end of 3rd quarter. in 4th quarter, tolzien found nick toon 19-yard touchdown pass extend wisconsin s lead 31-17. after penalty backed spartans up, msu rb glenn winston fumbled ball , wisconsin de j. j. watt recovered, setting badgers excellent field position. on 3rd , 1 michigan state 23, tolzien found garrett graham on 23-yard touchdown pass, 4th touchdown pass of game give wisconsin 38-17 lead 12:14 remaining in 4th quarter.
michigan state, desperate, drove wisconsin territory again, kirk cousins sacked on 4th , 10 wisconsin 32 lb chris borland , spartans turned ball on over downs. wisconsin drove right michigan state territory, john clay stopped short of first down on 4th , inches msu 20 lb greg jones. michigan state again drove wisconsin territory, keith nichol threw ill-advised pass coverage , intercepted wisconsin s chris maragos. wisconsin forced punt, however, , michigan state made of it, nichol found wr keshawn martin 15-yard touchdown. msu head coach mark dantonio elected try two, nichol s pass fell incomplete. wisconsin punted on next drive, , dantonio earned ire of camp randall crowd after nichol threw 91-yard touchdown pass martin game hopelessly out of reach.
despite garbage-time score michigan state, wisconsin rather handily won game , improved 4-0 on season. michigan state s 3rd straight defeat dropped them 1-3, matching regular season loss total previous season.

wisconsin refused let gophers game, , after long drive, john clay ran end zone 3rd touchdown of day , wisconsin led 31-21. minnesota responded swiftly, coming within 3 points of wisconsin after rb duane bennett scored on 1-yard touchdown carry make score 31-28. onside kick attempt failed, however, , minnesota had use remaining timeouts stall wisconsin on minnesota 39. brad nortman s punt partially blocked , downed @ minnesota 5-yard line, giving gophers 1 final chance @ snapping wisconsin s win streak.

wisconsin dominated ohio state offensively (with on 368 yards of total offense) , defensively (holding ohio state 184 yards of total offense), failed repeatedly capitalize on opportunities ohio state offered; philip welch missed pair of field goals , scott tolzien failed complete pair of passes on 4th , long situations in 4th quarter of game. wisconsin s missed opportunities, combined opportunistic buckeye defense, saw badgers drop first game of year, 31-13. loss dropped bret bielema 0-3 against ohio state.
