phase 1 of training third group of astronauts began in 1964 in lecture halls. lectures in several fields supplemented trips locations geological significance astronauts gained hands-on experience. in addition piloting spacecraft, astronauts perform scientific experiments , measurements on moon. astronauts traveled grand canyon learn geography way alaska, iceland, , hawaii learn rock formations , lava flows.


the second phase contingency training, focused on astronauts learning skills required survive if landing did not occur planned. group started training being dropped off in middle of jungle in panama. performed survival training in pairs, carrying parachutes , survival kits. chaffee, boy scout training, foraged enough food survive during three-day training mission. following jungle training, astronauts traveled entirely different environment: desert of reno, nevada. clothing, astronauts had long underwear, shoes, , robes manufactured parachutes. lizards , snakes main source of food, , astronauts used parachutes makeshift tents shelter 2 days of desert training.


the third , final phase operational training astronauts. focused on giving them hands-on experience using instruments , equipment required during spaceflight. received training in effects of microgravity , rapid acceleration. astronauts spent time in simulators, aboard cargo planes simulated weightlessness, underwater practice extravehicular activities (evas), , on visits manufacturing plants check on progress of hardware.
