andrew henry martin scholtz born on 28 july 1923 in kimberley, south africa. scholtz eldest of ten children. mother house mother , put , father sailmaker. scholtz passed standard 5 (grade 7) @ beaconsfield coloured school in kimberley. however, had leave school , work carpenter uncle in order support family after father broke hip , became bedridden. mother got him job.

career

poverty compelled him join army in october 1940. had present himself being 21 although 17. requirement joining cape corps have driver s license. did not have 1 joining artillery entity instead. here accepted white , conceded this, puts it, feed family not accepted white man . experience had lasting impact on him: being soldier in whites battalion, carried secret 5 years. returned after having served in kenya, ethiopia , egypt, alas, late father had passed on. had spent twenty months in north of italy prisoner of war before escaped.

12 june 1948 married gazina ortell siena, became mother of twelve children, in court in kimberley. worked while in swaziland , botswana, using trade taught him earlier in life , settled building contractor in mafikeng, south africa (then bophuthatswana). result of apartheid legislation never realise lifelong ideal of owning cattle farm although afford acquire farm in cash.

in 1995 andrew henry martin scholtz debuted, @ age of 75, novel vatmaar. although novel has afrikaans mindset wrote in english, in neat, handwritten hardcover books before daughter elizabeth translated it. worked on story period of 3 years before sending david phillip publishers in cape town, forwarded kwela books (afrikaans publishing company) story did not translate well. kwela books newly established company goal of finding new talent. annarie van der merwe of kwela books dediced afrikaans story should published in afrikaans.

scholtz wrote 2 more books while waiting publication of vatmaar, published later: langsaan die vuur: vyf lewensverhale (1996) en afdraai: ’n kroniek van seermaak en seerkry(1998).

death , afterward

on 17 november 2004 andrew henry martin scholtz died acute asthma after spending last 2 months being blind well. yet, remembered vatmaar.
