lifetime established on february 1, 1984 result of merger of hearst/abc s daytime , viacom s lifetime medical television. board new network formed equal representation hearst, abc , viacom, , board elected thomas burchill new network s first ceo. not initial success, reportedly losing $36 million in first 2 years of operation, , did not become profitable until 1986. channel suffered low viewership, poll reportedly finding tv viewers erroneously believed carried religious content.
in 1985, lifetime started branding talk television nightly lineup of talk shows , call-in programs hosted people including regis philbin , dr. ruth westheimer. in process, creators dropped apple logo.

in may 2012, lifetime unveiled new logo , branding campaign. new slogan, life. time. , reflects how women value , experience time. logo 11th in twenty years. in july 2012, nbc universal, owned comcast, exercised option sell stake in a&e networks, putting lifetime under ownership of disney , hearst.
on february 2, 2017, lifetime unveiled new logo, being red circle wordmark lifetime in white in center.
