Meteorological history Typhoon Cimaron (2006)
map plotting track , intensity of storm, according saffir–simpson scale
on october 24, 2006, area of disturbed weather, characterized flaring convection around low-level circulation, developed approximately 595 km (370 mi) east of guam. situated within region favoring tropical cyclogenesis, system consolidated tracked westward. late on october 25, japan meteorological agency (jma) classified low tropical depression. poleward outflow improving, joint typhoon warning center (jtwc) issued tropical cyclone formation alert following day before initiating advisories on tropical depression 22w. several hours later, philippine atmospheric, geophysical , astronomical services administration assigned storm local name paeng within area of responsibility. situated south of strong subtropical ridge, system maintained general west-northwest track. on october 27, depression strengthened tropical storm , assigned name cimaron jma. small storm subsequently underwent period of rapid intensification dual outflow channels developed; storm reached typhoon status on october 28. @ end of phase on october 29, cimaron attained peak intensity winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) , barometric pressure of 920 mbar (hpa; 27.17 inhg).
the jtwc estimated cimaron have been stronger system, attaining peak intensity category 5-equivalent super typhoon one-minute winds of 260 km/h (160 mph). however, satellite estimates forecasters within agency itself, national oceanic , atmospheric administration s satellite analysis branch (sab), air force weather agency (afwa), , dr. karl hoarau of cergy-pontoise university stated cimaron have been stronger system. using dvorak technique – method of determining tropical cyclone s intensity based on satellite appearance – afwa , sab yielded peak value of t7.5, 285 km/h (180 mph), while advanced operational values jtwc peaked @ t7.8, 305 km/h (190 mph). additionally, forecaster @ sab noted lower estimates due restrictions on dvorak technique stemming cimaron s rapid intensification. forecaster noted second type of estimate gave maximum value of t8.0, 315 km/h (195 mph), highest rating on scale.
while @ peak strength, cimaron displayed 2 small concentric eyewalls, separated few kilometres. storm later made landfall near casiguran, aurora in northern luzon shortly after 1200 utc on october 29; became 1 of strongest storms ever hit region. interaction island s mountainous terrain caused substantial weakening, though cimaron maintained typhoon status during 12‑hour crossing. after emerging on south china sea on october 30, system maintained west-northwest course. however, following day, weakness developed within ridge steering typhoon, , cimaron briefly turned north before stalling. during time, system reorganized , reached secondary peak intensity winds of 165 km/h (105 mph) on november 2. while executing tight clockwise loop, increased wind shear , entrainment of dry air caused cimaron dramatically weaken. new ridge becoming established on china, weakening system acquired general southwestward track. cimaron weakened tropical depression on november 4 , dissipated 3 days later off coast of southeastern vietnam.
