he joined tommy walker s hearts in 1955 making debut aged 18. particular hearts side had won breakthrough tournament year before winning 1954 scottish league cup final. young next won 1956 scottish cup final. hearts terrible trio forward line of jimmy wardhaugh, willie bauld , alfie conn, sr @ peak, young played @ right wing.


hearts led scottish league of 1956–57 season. title hinged on rangers visit tynecastle on 13 april. capacity crowd watched tense game in rangers keeper, george niven, man of match. hearts not beat him , goal came simpson of rangers scored on break in 35 minutes. rangers had games in hand won overtake hearts , lift trophy.


young helped hearts win scottish league championship in 1957–58, part of new hearts goal scoring trinity wardhaugh , jimmy murray. in crucial october visit ibrox, young scored transform 2-0 deficit 3-2 win. on 12 april 1958 hearts won 3-2 @ st mirren clinch title young scoring winner. wardhaugh league s top marksman 28 strikes. 1 ahead of jimmy murray s 27 , 4 more young s 24. hearts won league title in 1957–58 record-breaking points, goals scored , goal difference. record 34 league games of 62 points out of maximum possible 68 13 more nearest rival. scored 132 goals (still scottish top tier record) 29 against record net difference of +103.


young missed out on hearts october 1958 scottish league cup final win. led league championship in december injuries taking toll lost 6-0 in visit ibrox park. began poor run of 2 wins next 7 games. dave mackay sold in march tottenham hotspur, hearts fought contention when won 2–0 against rangers in april. rangers went last day of season 2 points clear , needing point clinch title. rangers lost 2–1 @ home aberdeen, giving hearts chance win title, lost 2–1.


in 1959/60 scored 23 goals hearts won league title again. in new year derby away hibs, young s hat-trick inspired 5-1. played season alongside boyhood hero, gordon smith, had joined hearts season. won 1959 scottish league cup final season. young playing @ centre forward scored winner second career goal clinch title.


between 1955 , 1960, young made 194 appearances heart of midlothian in competitions, scoring 103 goals. young inducted club s hall of fame in 2007.


everton

young transferred in november 1960 everton, along george thomson, £55,000. partnership roy vernon developed. young scored 22 league goals in 42 league games , made many other goals in everton s 1962–63 league championship winning season. elegant touch earned him nickname of golden vision , title coined danny blanchflower – ...the view every saturday have of more perfect world, world has got pattern , finite. , s alex – golden vision.


in addition championship, young won fa cup winners medal in everton s comeback win in 1966 fa cup final. young scored 89 goals in 275 appearances in competitions everton.


glentoran , stockport county

young sold glentoran in 1968 £10,000, , briefly managed club before failing hearing forced him step down. young later played briefly stockport county 23 games before knee injury forced retirement.


scotland

his full international debut scotland came in april 1960, in 1–1 draw against england attended 129,193 fans @ hampden park. november year had 6 caps, playing alongside everton player in each of last 2 caps (jimmy gabriel , alex parker). moved everton before end of month of latter of 2 internationals.


young played 1 international game in 1961, 3-0 win against republic of ireland, scoring twice. didn t play full international again 5 years, including championship winning season @ everton. young recalled national squad in summer 1966, after fa cup win. capped total of 8 times scotland, scoring 5 goals. scored 2 goals in 2 appearances scottish league.
