pyrausta aurata has wingspan of 18–20 millimetres (0.71–0.79 in). forewings purplish-brown golden yellow markings. number , intensity of these markings quite variable. in forewings there single postmedian round golden spot near costa, other minor golden spots. yellow spots can reduced complete absence. there indistinct wavy golden postmedian line between dorsum , main golden spot. hindwings dark brown or black broad yellow transverse band approximately in wing center , without additional spot closer basal area.


the moth similar related pyrausta purpuralis, larger moth broad postmedian continuous band, divided @ least 3 yellow spots.


the caterpillar can reach length of 13 mm. may light green, dark green, light brown, black gray or reddish, darker line. head brownish black. pupa quite slender, red-brown black-brown.
