History M-66 (Michigan highway)

m-66 first signed along roadway july 1, 1919 between m-16 (now m-21) @ lowell , m-46 near lakeview. designation extended in 1925 along m-46 6 lakes , north m-13 (now us 131) in lodi. further extension north lodi in 1929 or 1930 along m-131 mancelona, short segment of m-88 , north us 31 in charlevoix. southern end extended us 16 south of lowell 1931. section of northern extension marked on maps through 1933 under construction . section cancelled in favor of routing near mancelona. short bypass of 6 lakes added mile length of roadway in 1936. m-131 concurrency switched us 131 concurrency when latter extended in 1939. concurrency shortened before world war ii when michigan state highway department (mshd) rerouted us 131 along new road between south boardman , kalkaska.


the mshd completed major rerouting of m-66 around 1944–45. m-14 designation of time decommissioned , replaced m-66. starting @ 6 lakes, m-66 turned west along m-46 instead of east , turned south through stanton , ionia ending north of battle creek. highway between lowell , lakeview redesignated m-91. minor realignment in late 1950 removed 2 90° curves near osceola–missaukee county line , replaced them pair of sweeping curves.


the mshd rerouted m-66 between maple grove , nashville in mid-1953. in changes, m-79 extended along new route of m-66 , on m-214 hastings. m-66 shifted off assyria road turned local control. realignment in 1954 shifted m-66 modern routing between m-43 concurrency termini, removing m-43/m-66 section of m-50 in process. final section gravel section of m-66, approximately 11 miles (18 km) in length, paved near nashville in 1957. m-32 extended along northernmost section of m-66 in 1963.


m-66 extended southerly assyria through battle creek indiana state line replacing sections of m-78 in 1965. m-66 turned south , west along m-60 , new highway colon. segment of former m-78 not used m-66 transferred local control. final section of m-78 s roadway given m-66 extended way state line, resulting in north–south trans-peninsular highway lake michigan near charlevoix indiana. m-66 such highway run length of lower peninsula. extension allowed green arrow association promote whole length of green arrow route single highway number. next year, m-66 rerouted through battle creek use completed i-194 freeway.


a 90° turn in missaukee county removed north of lake city in 1972. in late 1973 or 1974, m-66 , m-72 shifted around south side of kalkaska. later in 1974, m-32 concurrency removed when m-32 scaled former terminus. project in 1981 furthered 1972 realignment in missaukee county. 4 miles (6.4 km) shortened routing when new alignment built between smithville , phelps road.
