Habitability Red dwarf

an artist s impression of planet 2 exomoons orbiting in habitable zone of red dwarf.

planetary habitability of red dwarf systems subject debate. in spite of great numbers , long lifespans, there several factors may make life difficult on planets around red dwarf. first, planets in habitable zone of red dwarf close parent star tidally locked. mean 1 side in perpetual daylight , other in eternal night. create enormous temperature variations 1 side of planet other. such conditions appear make difficult forms of life similar on earth evolve. , appears there great problem atmosphere of such tidally locked planets: perpetual night zone cold enough freeze main gases of atmospheres, leaving daylight zone nude , dry. on other hand, recent theories propose either thick atmosphere or planetary ocean potentially circulate heat around such planet.

variability in stellar energy output may have negative impacts on development of life. red dwarfs flare stars, can emit gigantic flares, doubling brightness in minutes. variability may make difficult life develop , persist near red dwarf. may possible planet orbiting close red dwarf keep atmosphere if star flares. however, more-recent research suggests these stars may source of constant high-energy flares , large magnetic fields, diminishing possibility of life know it. whether peculiarity of star under examination or feature of entire class remains determined.
