ho s wife , children emigrated san jose, california in 1979 pursue university education , followed in 1995 after retiring cinema. restless in retirement, ho s health began decline until family suggested pursue photography again. rather using modern equipment , taking photographs locally in san francisco bay area, ho went through old negatives hong kong , began showing portfolio local galleries.


he exhibited slides of photographs, of in permanent collection @ sfmoma, @ 1998 new asian cinema festival, screening 1988 film carnal desire @ 4 star theater in san francisco. chance meeting mark pinsukanjana in 1999 led ho being featured @ pinsukanjana s modernbook gallery in palo alto in 2000, first solo exhibition since 1960s, , in 2001, , ho s films , photographs continued shown @ festivals hosted @ 4 star. ho s daughter credits first palo alto exhibition in 2000 restoring ho s confidence , happiness.


modernbook went on stage vintage work @ photola in january 2006, , upon seeing photographs of hong kong, fellow gallery owner laurence miller moved acquire 26 prints , put on solo exhibit ho in new york city later year. ho go on publish new monograph, hong kong yesterday in 2006 after receiving international attention work. compositing old negatives, ho continued produce new prints of scenes have vanished modern hong kong. many of resulting composited prints published first time in final monograph hong kong memoir in 2014, following exhibits of same title @ modernbook in summer 2011 , december 2014 january 2015.


he died in san jose on 19 june 2016 of pneumonia @ age of 84. posthumously, thirty-two photographs taken in 1950s hong kong related objects, including rolleiflex camera , book, thoughts on street photography, exhibited @ sotheby s hong kong gallery in last half of june 2017. new monograph, portrait of hong kong, published in june 2017 coincide exhibition.


portrait of hong kong 《舊香港人的舊》 contains 153 new street photographs selected 500 negatives chosen ho before died in 2016. after death, surviving family members spent year completing project, support sarah greene (blue lotus consultancy) , press (香港人出版). 20 quotable excerpts ho s earliest book, thoughts on street photography 《街頭攝影叢談》, included. these 153 photographs provide not glimpses of hong kong in 1950s , 1960s recall indomitable spirit of people @ time body of realistic street photographs never highly recognized during 1950s , 1960s, despite being ho s favorites, quoted in ho’s reply sarah greene during 1 of visits ho in 2016. quote appeared in afterword of latest monograph:
