the mbenga (aka/benzele) , baka peoples in west , mbuti (efé) in east particularly known dense contrapuntal communal improvisation. simha arom says level of polyphonic complexity of mbenga–mbuti music reached in europe in 14th century. polyphonic singing of aka pygmies relisted on representative list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2008.


mbenga–mbuti pygmy music consists of 4 parts , can described ostinato variations similar passacaglia in cyclical. based on repetition of periods of equal length each singer divides using different rhythmic figures specific different repertoires , songs. creates detailed surface , endless variations not of same period repeated of various performances of same piece of music. in balinese gamelan music these patterns based on super-pattern never heard. pygmies not learn or think of music in theoretical framework, learn music growing up.
