aida cruises originates state-owned german shipping conglomerate deutsche seereederei, established in rostock, germany in 1952. company entered passenger market in 1960s, after unification of germany in 1990, company privatised , passenger ships acquired deutsche seetouristik. in 1996, company launched first new cruise ship aida, after failing achieve profit, ship sold norwegian cruise line, continuing operations under charter agreement. in 1999, deutsche seetouristik acquired british shipping company p&o, aida being repurchased ncl. p&o subsequently formed aida cruises subsidiary brand, 2 new ships ordered form fleet. aida renamed aidacara, aidavita , aidaaura launched in 2002 , 2003 respectively. 2000 2003, aida cruises subsidiary of p&o princess cruises plc , since formation of carnival corporation & plc in 2003, has been under executive control of costa cruises group, corporate headquarters in genoa, italy , operational headquarters in rostock, germany.

carnival cruise line founded in 1972 subsidiary of american international travel service (aits), ted arison , meshulam riklis. due mounting debts, riklis sold stake in company arison $1 in 1974. through acquisition of existing ships, company continued grow and, in 1980, carnival ordered first new commission, tropicale, completed in 1981/2. 3 further ships commissioned during 1980s, holiday (1985), jubilee (1986) , celebration (1987). in 1987, carnival completed initial public offering of 20 percent of common stock on new york stock exchange, raising approximately $400m in capital. capital raised used finance acquisitions, in 1993 business restructured holding company, under name carnival corporation, carnival cruise line becoming principal subsidiary. carnival continues largest single brand within carnival group today, operating twenty 6 vessels.

costa cruises originates cargo shipping company founded giacomo costa fu andrea in genoa, italy in 1854. better known costa line or c line 1920s, first passenger carrier maria c, former u.s. navy stores ship partly converted passenger use , served various routes north , south america 1947 1953. company s first dedicated passenger ship anna c, cargo vessel requisitioned war time use royal navy , refitted accommodation ship before returning merchant use. costa purchased ship in 1947 , operated between italy , south america 1948, later converting full-time cruising , serving company until 1971. late 1960s until 1980s, costa rapidly developed passenger operations recognise modern cruise ships. subsequently, in 1987, consolidated cruise ship operations new company, costa cruises, @ peak, largest cruise ship operator in world. takeover of costa cruises carnival corporation began in 1997, 50/50 deal between carnival , british tour operator airtours. carnival began purchasing airtours shares in company, becoming sole shareholder in september 2000. costa cruises 1 of largest brands within carnival group, 15 ships.

cunard line

the second oldest brand in carnival group after p&o cruises, cunard line originates 1840 , celebrated 175th anniversary in 2015. founded samuel cunard, awarded first trans-atlantic mail contract in 1837 , established british , north american royal mail steam-packet company in 1840. after dominating trans-atlantic route, need new capital led company being re-organised cunard steamship company ltd in 1879. 1900s saw increased competition speed, particularly germany, led british government subsidise building of mauretania , lusitania, both won blue riband. competition continued increase , 1930s, cunard experiencing financial difficulties. secure further government subsidy, agreed merge chief rival white star line, form cunard-white star line in 1934. cunard later purchased remaining white star shares in 1947, reverting name cunard line in 1949. cunard continued operate independently until 1971, when acquired conglomerate trafalgar house, in turn taken on norwegian company kværner in 1996. in 1998, carnival corporation purchased controlling stake in cunard, completing acquisition in 1999 become sole shareholder. since time, cunard has been 1 of carnival s high-profile brands, continued popularity of famous queen elizabeth 2 , development of world s largest trans-atlantic ocean liner queen mary 2, continues flagship of fleet. following merger of carnival corporation , carnival plc in 2003, executive control of cunard brand transferred carnival uk, corporate , operational headquarters in southampton, england.

holland america line originated plate, reuchlin & company, founded in rotterdam, netherlands, in 1871. struggling survive, company went public in 1873, renamed nederlandsch amerikaansche stoomvaart maatschappij (nasm). company grew in years, acquiring several new ships, including ss rotterdam, operated company s first passenger cruise in 1895. company became known shortened english name, holland america line, officially adopted in 1869. 1900s, company had separated cargo , passenger operations, passenger ships being identifiable names ending dam, tradition continues holland america cruise ships today. development of container shipping in 1960s, forced company make decision between investing in new cargo ships, or cruise ships. sold cargo operations, becoming exclusively cruise ship company in 1973. holland america continued thrive 1980s, consolidating business acquisitions of westours, windstar cruises , home lines. in 1989 however, subject of acquisition, when purchased in full carnival corporation. since formation of carnival corporation , plc in 2003, holland america line has been 1 of principal operating companies of carnival group, corporate , operational headquarters in seattle.
