the pass became important trade route after city of trieste went under umbrella of habsburg archdukes in late 14th century. 1560 carinthian estates had former bridle path extended , 150 m (500 ft) long tunnel built underneath karawanks ridge, example of modern engineering later had removed due lack of safety. attempt planned in 17th century; however, when in 1728 emperor charles vi toured lands of habsburg monarchy, still had travel on loibl summit, stopping deutscher peter tavern north of pass. thereafter ordered expansion of mountain road part of long-distance route austrian capital vienna port of trieste. 2 obelisks erected @ top of pass commemorate stay.
