eugene james martin born on capitol hill. parents margaret helen dove , james walter martin, itinerant jazz musician. after mother died in 1942 giving birth jerry martin, 2 brothers placed in foster care in washington dc. child, eugene ran away on several occasions, placed in reform school @ 6 years of age, , spent remainder of childhood on farm in clarksburg, maryland foster parents franie , madessa snowdon. on farm drew realistic portraits , nature scenes, , played upright bass, thunder bass, , slide trombone in local rhythm & blues band nu-tones. after attending clarksburg elementary, , lincoln high , carver high in rockville, maryland, martin pondered whether become full-time musician or visual artist. briefly attended navy opportunity receive art education, instead honorably discharged.

after attending corcoran school of art 1960–1963, eugene james martin became professional fine arts painter, considering artistic integrity guide. did not adhere particular school or art movement, remaining individualist throughout life. art defies categorization.

while spending of life in washington dc, martin briefly lived in chapel hill, north carolina, 1990–1994, returned washington dc, , in 1996 moved lafayette, louisiana wife, suzanne fredericq, biologist, whom married in 1988. in december 2001 suffered simultaneously brain hemorrhage , stroke while in belgium. after undergoing physical therapy in lafayette, resumed painting , continued creating art until death.
