the state territory covers 7 distinct climatic types, taking account temperature , rainfall. in mountain areas of state, there subtropical climate (cfa in köppen climate classification), in areas of high altitude such serra mar e serra da mantiqueira, having humid, hot summers , average temperatures below 18 °c (64 °f) in month cooler year; , oceanic (cfb , cwb) regular , distributed throughout year , warmer summers rains.


on coast, climate super-humid tropical type, similar prevailing equatorial climate in amazon (af), rainfall exceeding sixty monthly millimeters in every month of year, without existence of dry season. tropical climate of altitude (cwa), predominant in state territory, in center of state, characterized summer rainy season , dry season in winter, temperatures above 22 °c (72 °f) in hottest month of year. in other areas, there tropical savanna climate (aw) rainfall less 60 millimetres (2.4 in) in 1 or more months of year , warmer, average temperatures above 18 °c (64 °f) during year. there small areas characteristics of monsoons (am).


the occurrence of snow rare, has been recorded in campos jordão , there reports phenomenon has occurred in several parts of south of state, except ribeira valley. frosts common, in higher areas altitude of 800 metres (2,600 ft).
