auchinleck castle recorded being extant in 1241. @ time, castle seat of auchinlecks of ilk, had held barony since @ least 13th century , possibly earlier. castle, , barony, remained within auchinleck family until 1504 when due failing auchinleck male line, , marriage of daughter of sir john auchinleck thomas boswell, estate , title granted boswell king james iv. boswell assumed title of laird date. not known when auchinleck castle ceased inhabited. ruins still stand within grounds of auchinleck estate, on low sandstone cliff overlooks confluence of river lugar , dippol burn.

in 1591 john boswell in trouble privy council practising witchcraft, sorcery , enchantments, consulting witches , taking part in other devilish activities. richie graham, notorious wizard of day, admitted having raised devil @ auchinleck. boswell s response these allegations flee country.

the new auchinleck house built circa 1760 alexander boswell, lord auchinleck, 8th laird of auchinleck. later passed on son, james boswell, biographer of samuel johnson. boswell , johnson visited house in 1773 on way journey hebrides. in 1782, james boswell became 9th laird of auchinleck. design of house has been attributed robert adam, although may have been designed alexander boswell himself.

during second world war, laird of auchinleck gave permission officers armies of poland, canada , france live in auchinleck house.


in 1986 remains of buildings turned on scottish historic buildings trust james boswell, descendent of 18th-century boswells. trust repaired roof, , ensured survival of building. in 1999 auchinleck house bought landmark trust, building preservation charity aim rescue historic , architecturally interesting buildings , surroundings neglect and, when restored, give them new life letting them holidays. restored, auchinleck house used holiday lets, , open public.
