in 2005–06 season, after nhl play resumed, cullen won stanley cup carolina hurricanes. after season, became unrestricted free agent , subsequently signed four-year contract new york rangers. after 1 season rangers, cullen traded hurricanes during 2006–07 off-season in exchange defenseman andrew hutchinson, forward joe barnes , third-round draft pick in 2008 nhl entry draft in rangers attempt free salary space underneath cap.


on february 22, 2009, cullen scored first hat-trick of career in game against colorado avalanche. on february 12, 2010, traded ottawa senators in exchange alexandre picard , second-round draft pick.

on july 1, 2010, cullen returned home state when signed three-year deal free agent minnesota wild. upon expiration of three-year contract wild, , team facing salary cap constraints, cullen departed free agent , signed two-year contract nashville predators on july 5, 2013.


on august 6, 2015, cullen signed one-year deal pittsburgh penguins, reuniting him former hurricanes general manager jim rutherford, whom won stanley cup in 2006. cullen won second stanley cup on june 12, 2016. on august 17, 2016, cullen signed second one-year deal penguins. on june 11, 2017, cullen won second consecutive stanley cup penguins when defeated predators in 6 games in stanley cup finals.


on august 16, 2017, after winning back-to-back stanley cup championships penguins, cullen signed one-year contract return minnesota wild.
