during 2004 presidential campaign, opposition candidate viktor yushchenko pledged solve case if became president. yushchenko did become president following subsequent orange revolution , launched new investigation, replacing country s prosecutor-general.


the gongadze murder trial began on 9 january 2006, in kiev. 3 former policemen charged killing of georgiy gongadze. suspect, ex-police general oleksiy pukach, had been believed have fled abroad found in ukraine in 2009 living under real name, arrested , charged. on day trial started, myroslava gongadze commented on fact no 1 has been charged ordering killing: known , should punished same sitting in dock today .
