the ceremonial county of durham administered 4 unitary authorities. ceremonial county has no administrative function, remains area lord lieutenant of durham , high sheriff of durham appointed.



county durham (governed durham county council): unitary district formed on 1 april 2009 replacing previous two-tier system of county council providing strategic services , 7 district councils providing more local facilities. has 126 councillors. 7 districts abolished were:

chester-le-street, including lumley, pelton , sacriston areas
derwentside, including consett , stanley
city of durham, including durham city , surrounding areas
easington, including seaham , new town of peterlee
borough of sedgefield, including spennymoor , newton aycliffe
teesdale, including barnard castle , villages of teesdale
wear valley, including bishop auckland, crook, willington, hunwick, , villages along weardale


the borough of darlington: before 1 april 1997, darlington district in two-tier arrangement durham county council.
the borough of hartlepool: until 1 april 1996 borough 1 of 4 districts in relatively short-lived county of cleveland, abolished.
the part of borough of stockton-on-tees north of centre of river tees. stockton part of cleveland until county s abolition in 1996. remainder of borough part of ceremonial county of north yorkshire.
