clothing served important function nobles because after lost legal privileges in 19th century, manner of dressing 1 of few ways demonstrate different peasants. ukrainian nobility retained particular forms of clothing differentiated them both ukrainian peasants , polish nobility, although of ukrainian type. nobles tended decorate clothes black rather red embroidery because latter color considered peasant-like. indeed, tended avoid colors in general , dressed in shades of black , gray. in regions customary men wear blue cloaks grey edges similar cossack zupans. women wore coats fox-fur collars. nobles wore vests 2 rows instead of 1 row of buttons. village nobility interested in wearing same clothes townsfolk wore. men wore collared shirts , ties. because many of nobles unable afford buy such clothes, sewed approximations of them using same materials peasants used clothing. if noble married peasant, noble forbidden other nobles wearing clothes identifying noble , if caught doing so, or noble clothes torn off.
