introduced in 1964, 7eca first version of design , utilized continental o-200-a engine of 100 horsepower (75 kw). when introduced, featured wood-spar wings , oleo-shock main gear. within first year of production, champion began offering lycoming o-235-c1 engine of 115 horsepower (86 kw) alternative continental. in 1967, champion switched spring steel main gear legs; then, lycoming engine had become standard. on acquiring design, bellanca gave model name citabria standard , began using 115 horsepower (86 kw) lycoming o-235-k2c engine. when american champion reintroduced 7eca in 1995 citabria aurora, biggest change use of metal-spar wings; recent significant design change has been switch aluminum main gear legs in 2004.

the citabria pro tested champion in 1968, never put production @ champion nor bellanca acquired company , designs short time later. citabria pro based on 7kcab, vertically shortened fuselage, wing of semi-symmetric airfoil mounted in parasol configuration, , unique engine, lycoming io-360spl. while flown single-seat, there second set of controls , room second seat. design changes intended produce aircraft capable of more complex maneuvers , better performance in inverted flight. sources conflict on whether citabria pro assigned model number 8kcab or 9kcab. since 8kcab designation belonged decathlon design, in development @ champion @ same time, unlikely used citabria pro.
