fairbanks morse , company began in 1823 when inventor thaddeus fairbanks opened ironworks in st. johnsbury, vermont, manufacture 2 of patented inventions: cast iron plow , heating stove. in 1829 started hemp dressing business built machinery. though unsuccessful in fabricating fiber factories, invention thaddeus, platform scale, formed basis great enterprise. device patented in june 1832, , generation later, e. & t. fairbanks & company selling thousands of scales, first in united states, later in europe, south america , imperial china. scales integral business marine , railway shippers charged weight. fairbanks scales won 63 medals on years in international competition. became leading manufacturer in us, , best-known company world on until henry ford , ford corporation assumed title in 1920s.


in wisconsin, former missionary named leonard wheeler designed durable windmill pumping water, eclipse windmill. wheeler set shop in beloit after civil war. half million windmills dotted landscape throughout west , far away australia. @ same time, fairbanks & company employee, charles hosmer morse, opened fairbanks office in chicago, expanded company s territory of operation , widened product line. part of expansion, morse brought wheeler , eclipse windmill pumps business fairbanks company. morse later became partner in fairbanks company , end of nineteenth century, known fairbanks morse & company , headquartered in chicago. canadian , american cities had branch dealerships, fairbanks first coming montreal, canada, in 1876 , later opening factory there.
