sumardjo writes that, though allah jang palsoe published 7 years before rustam effendi s bebasari (generally considered first canonic indonesian stage drama), kwee tek hoay s writing shows hallmarks of literary work. though drama not considered part of indonesian literary canon, performances have continued 21st century. in may 2003, jakarta-based mainteater (id) put on abridged performance directed e. sumadiningrat. jakarta-based troupe, teater bejana, has included in repertoire.
