in 1680 charles xi effected political , military reforms in parliament whereby made himself autocrat. greatest reform building of allotment system whereby farmers in every land provide crown full regiment of 1000 men complete weapons , uniforms. every land divided roots (roots poor translation of swedish rote ; more correctly should squadron or group). 1 5 farmers form root , sign contract crown provide , support soldier. in contract stipulated soldier provided cottage , garden plot.


the cavalry built same, difference being root provided horse; being burden, root granted tax reduction crown. in way karl xi ensured professional army of 18,000 infantry , 8,000 cavalry. there additional 7,000 infantry , 3,000 cavalry in finland. along coast , major city ports seamen taken in under system, providing navy 6,600 seamen in sweden , 600 in finland.


it said charles xii not retreat, attack or fall . same goes soldiers. in swedish army tactics of time retreat never covered. troops obligated attack or fight stood.
