on november 16, 1959, boston business executive billy sullivan awarded eighth , final franchise of developing american football league (afl). following winter, locals allowed submit ideas boston football team s official name. popular choice – , 1 sullivan selected – boston patriots, patriots referring colonists of thirteen colonies rebelled against british control during american revolution , in july 1776 declared united states of america independent nation. thereafter, artist phil bissell of boston globe developed pat patriot logo.


the patriots struggled of years in afl, , never had regular home stadium. nickerson field, harvard stadium, fenway park, , alumni stadium served home fields during time in american football league. played in 1 afl championship game, following 1963 season, in lost san diego chargers 51–10. did not appear again in afl or nfl post-season game 13 years.


when nfl , afl merged in 1970, patriots placed in american football conference (afc) east division, still play today. following year, patriots moved new stadium in foxborough, massachusetts, serve home next 30 years. result of move, announced change name boston patriots bay state patriots. name rejected nfl , on march 22, 1971, team officially announced change geographic name new england.


during 1970s, patriots had success, earning berth playoffs in 1976—as wild card team—and in 1978—as afc east champions. lost in first round both times. in 1985, returned playoffs, , made way super bowl xx, lost chicago bears 46–10. following super bowl loss, returned playoffs in 1986, lost in first round. team not make playoffs again 8 more years. during 1990 season, patriots went 1–15. changed ownership 3 times in ensuing 14 years, being purchased sullivan family first victor kiam in 1988, sold team james orthwein in 1992. orthwein intended move team native st. louis, missouri (where have been renamed st. louis stallions), instead sold team in 1994 current owner robert kraft.


though orthwein s period owner short , controversial, did oversee major changes team, first hiring of former new york giants coach bill parcells in 1993. orthwein , marketing team commissioned nfl develop new visual identity , logo, , changed primary colors traditional red, white , blue blue , silver team uniforms. parcells bring patriots 2 playoff appearances, including super bowl xxxi, lost green bay packers score of 35–21. pete carroll, parcells s successor, take team playoffs twice in 1997 & 1998 before being dismissed head coach after 1999 season.


the patriots current coach, bill belichick, hired in 2000, , new home field, gillette stadium, opened in 2002. under belichick, team won 3 super bowls in 4 years (2001, 2003, , 2004). patriots finished 2007 regular season perfect 16–0 record, becoming fourth team in league history go undefeated in regular season, , 1 since league expanded regular season schedule 16 games. after advancing super bowl xlii, team s fourth super bowl in 7 years, patriots defeated giants end bid 19–0 season. loss, patriots ended year @ 18–1, becoming 1 of 3 teams go 18–1 along 1984 san francisco 49ers , 1985 chicago bears. patriots returned super bowl in 2012 lost again giants, 21–17. in 2015, won super bowl xlix, defeating seattle seahawks score of 28–24. patriots became first team reach 9 super bowls in 2016–17 playoffs , faced atlanta falcons in super bowl li, ended paving way fifth super bowl victory, tying them dallas cowboys , san francisco 49ers second-most in nfl history, 1 behind pittsburgh steelers 6; game first super bowl go overtime.
