on november 16, 1959, boston business executive billy sullivan awarded eighth , final franchise of developing american football league (afl). following winter, locals allowed submit ideas boston football team s official name. popular choice – , 1 sullivan selected – boston patriots, patriots referring colonists of thirteen colonies rebelled against british control during american revolution , in july 1776 declared united states of america independent nation. thereafter, artist phil bissell of boston globe developed pat patriot logo.
