as of june 30, 2017, u-m s financial endowment (the university endowment fund ) valued @ $10.9 billion. endowment used according donors wishes, include support of teaching , research. in mid-2000, u-m embarked on fund-raising campaign called michigan difference , aimed raise $2.5 billion, $800 million designated permanent endowment. slated run through december 2008, university announced campaign had reached target 19 months in may 2007. ultimately, campaign raised $3.2 billion on 8 years. on course of capital campaign, 191 additional professorships endowed, bringing university total 471 of 2009. colleges , universities, u-m suffered significant realized , unrealized losses in endowment during second half of 2008. in february 2009, university spokesperson estimated losses of between 20 , 30 percent.

student government

housed in michigan union, central student government (csg) central student government of university. representatives each of university s colleges , schools, including graduate students, csg represents students , manages student funds on campus. csg 501(c)(3) organization, independent university of michigan. in recent years csg has organized airbus, transportation service between campus , detroit metropolitan wayne county airport, , has led university s efforts register student population vote, voice vote commission (vyv) registering 10,000 students in 2004. vyv works improve access non-partisan voting-related information , increase student voter turnout. csg successful @ reviving homecoming activities, including carnival , parade, students after eleven-year absence in october 2007, , during 2013-14 school year, instrumental in persuading university rescind unpopular change in student football seating policy @ michigan stadium. in 2017, csg petitioned ann arbor city council create student advisory council give student input ann arbor city affairs.


there student governance bodies in each college , school, independent of central student government. undergraduate students in ls&a represented ls&a student government (lsa sg). engineering student government (esg) manages undergraduate student government affairs college of engineering. graduate students enrolled in rackham graduate school represented rackham student government (rsg), , law students represented law school student senate (lsss) each other college own respective government. in addition, students live in residence halls represented university of michigan residence halls association (rha), contains third constituents after csg , lsa sg.
