during 1990s, site in south of edinburgh developed new royal infirmary of edinburgh, opened in 2003. part of redevelopment, number of smaller hospitals closed, work centralised @ new infirmary. princess margaret rose closed in 2000, site sold housing £4.3 million in 2002.
the developers, bryant homes, built 67 houses , 2 apartment blocks in first phase of development, plus converted third block (the former nurses quarters) flats. initial plans second phase had relied on adapting existing orthopaedic wing, listed building, demolished after arson attack in 2002. replaced new development 6 flats , seventeen terraced houses,under name princess gate , designed malcolm fraser architects. later received scottish design award , shortlisted rias andrew doolan best building in scotland award in 2007.
