loibl tunnel , historic pass road
the mountain pass located on austrian-slovenian border @ 1,367 metres above adriatic (4,485 ft), east of stol massif. mountain road (loiblpass straße, b 91), 1 of steepest in eastern alps, winds broad drava valley in numerous hairpin curves top of pass, parallel loiblbach brook , picturesque tscheppa (Čepa) gorge several waterfalls. kleiner loibl (sapotnica) pass, small road branches off remote bodental valley. since 1963-64 traffic passes through two-lane tunnel @ 1,069 m (3,507 ft) underneath mountain crest. south of pass, road (no. 101) runs down via podljubelj tržič in sava valley , further a2 motorway. nearby mountain passes wurzen pass in west , seeberg saddle in east.
formerly 1 of important road connections between carinthian capital klagenfurt , kranj in carniola, significance of loibl pass has diminished since 1991, when 7,864 m (25,801 ft) long karawanken motorway tunnel, connecting austrian karawanken autobahn (a 11) villach slovenian a2 motorway ljubljana, opened. today pass road closed heavy traffic. border controls abolished when slovenia joined schengen area effective 21 december 2007, have been restored temporarily entry austria in wake of increased number of illegal border crossings during european migrant crisis of 2015-2016.
