grissom high school founded in 1969 , named astronaut virgil i. gus grissom, killed in apollo 1 fire @ cape kennedy, florida on january 27, 1967. huntsville home nasa s marshall space flight center , has ties space program. @ same time, huntsville city schools named roger b. chaffee elementary , ed white middle school grissom s fallen apollo 1 crewmates.


in august 2012, huntsville city schools announced plans tear down original two-story main high school building , replace three-story structure @ estimated cost of $58 million. rebuild see ninth graders held @ feeder middle schools until construction completed in 2016.


tom drake served grissom s principal 2000 through august 2013. school board named june kalange, vice-principal , former science teacher @ grissom, replacement in august 2013. of 2015, current principal rebecca balentine.

the huntsville city schools had been contemplating rebuilding school around 2016 either @ current site, or else @ 60-acre site adjacent weatherly road s west end. board learned on march 7, 2013, different, larger piece of land offered @ no additional cost south of weatherly road site. now-under construction grissom property on national boulevard, west of lowe s , sam s club. published plans extend weatherly road across memorial parkway in order serve site.

second of 2 mou between mayor battle , superintendent wardysnki adds third party: hylis inc. president john w. hays

the mous acknowledge gift city hylis consisting of difference between selling price ($2,531,267) , appraised value ($9,830,000 per hylis). additional parcels access roads , park donated hylis.


re-use of bailey cove site

several plans under discussion usage of grissom high school s present campus @ 7901 bailey cove road.


one plan envisions creation of southeast huntsville municipal complex, include:



relocation of huntsville-madison county public library s bailey cove branch
relocation of huntsville police department s south precinct
gymnasium , athletic fields become parks , recreation department facility
auditorium becomes community theater/conference center
cost estimated @ $8.4 million

a memorandum of understanding (mou) regarding ghs land on agenda board of education work session of may 2, 2013. mou approved @ session pledges transfer city of huntsville, of grissom , j.o. johnson high school campuses, following respective relocations.
